Bipartisan Action Needed

TO THE EDITORS: The prospect of seeing U.S. energy reform take place became very encouraging with the news that GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) has co- authored a climate bill with Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.).

A New Day at County Prison?

TO THE EDITORS: I was able to observe the last of the trainings done for Lancaster County Prison staff based on the updated code of ethics. Warwick Township Police Chief Richard Garipoli, a renowned trainer, spent many hours on his own time to provide this training. As you often hear about the unfortunate things that happen in the prison, I want you to know about this very positive step.

Detriments of Homosexual Unions

TO THE EDITORS: Kate Simmons, in her letter ("Familial qualities not limited to heterosexual unions," Nov. 12) concluded that we should "focus our misdirected attention on the true origins of our societal crises." I agree, but wonder whose attention is "misdirected."

L-S Play a Superb Production

TO THE EDITORS: "If this play isn't good, we're going to be four angry men and one angry woman," I told my friends on Thursday evening, as we headed off to see the Lampeter-Strasburg High School production of "Twelve Angry Jurors." The title was changed from "Angry Men" because eight of the jurors were female.

Capturing the Man's Essence

Your Nov. 14 editorial successfully captured the essence of John A. Jarvis. As one of his regular breakfast companions for more than four years prior to his passing, I observed the interest, depth of knowledge and dedication to community and educational affairs that he possessed and exercised. As I told his widow, Sally, in a note of condolence, he was an icon to be admired, respected and hopefully emulated by the whole Lancaster community. Austin M. Lee

Distressed Budget

When Mayor Rick Gray goes before City Council Tuesday, he will present a budget that is as dire as any this city has seen. Gray will warn of a $5.3 million budget gap that will have to be bridged by possible layoffs and early retirements, wage and benefits concessions, a huge withdrawal in the city's reserve fund and an increase in the property tax. The budget gap is due to a variety of factors - the large number of tax-exempt nonprofit service agencies, churches and schools that call Lancast...

Breast Guidelines and Health Politics

The uproar over last week's breast-cancer-screening recommendations from a government-appointed panel illustrates part of what's wrong with trying to overhaul completely the nation's massive and complex health-care system. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force decided that most women 40 to 50 years old really don't need mammograms every year, but women 50 years and older could benefit from testing every two years.

Harrisburg Freeze

Last Thursday we called on political leaders, at all levels, to freeze their salaries. We commended a bill in the state House to suspend a planned cost-of-living adjustment for members of the General Assembly. In fact, the bill was not necessary.

Finding Arrowheads, Touching History ; Thrill of the Hunt

"Can I touch history?" one of my daughters asked me. She said it as I held a chiseled white piece of quartz in my palm and told her I thought it was likely an arrowhead fashioned on this spot more than 400 years ago by a vanished and vanquished race of man.
