Summary
Harper Huntington Hull, 88, of Willow Street, formerly of Conestoga Boulevard, Lancaster, died peacefully on Saturday August 22, 2009, at Lakeside Healthcare Facility, Willow Valley Lakes Manor. Born in Hillsdale, MI, he was the son of the late Schuyler M. and Marjorie Luce Hull. An Eagle Scout, he graduated from Hillsdale High School, Michigan and the University of Michigan with degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, with Phi Kappa Phi honors. He was a dedicated husband for 63 years to Betty Lou Percy Hull who died October 24, 2006. He was a faithful and active member of Calvary Church, Lancaster serving as Church Clerk, Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. The father of six children, Harper was actively involved with their upbringing. Concerned with the public school system, he helped with the development of the Lancaster Christian School serving as president of the Lancaster Christian School Board. Harper began his career as a naval architect working for the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp designing government ships during WW II and then later for the Owens Yacht Company. In 1948 he partnered with Jim McQueen to start the Trojan Boat Company (later Trojan Yachts), Lancaster, later adding plants in Elkton, MD and Ontario, Canada. Manufacturing in mahogany plywood and white oak, he designed boats from the 12-ft "car topper" to 52-ft luxury yachts. Leaving the company in the early 1970's, he embarked on his own ventures creating Christian Ventures, Inc. In 1975 he joined G. Patrick Stillman Enterprises as an accountant, working full time until late January of this year. In his later years, Harper, a lifetime sailor, joined the Willow Valley Yacht Club building and racing remote control sailboats.
He is survived by his six children: Jocelyn, wife of Stanley Pyett, Ypsilanti, MI; Kerry, wife of Daniel Elliott, Centennial, CO; Becky, wife of Bruce Nickles, Akron, PA; Kipling Hull, husband of Patricia Artz, Holtwood, PA; Eloise Hull of Nashville, TN; and Kelvin Hull of Prescott, AZ; three granddaughters: Katie, wife of Matthew West; Kristi, wife of Patrick Whalen; and Kerilee Nickles; and one great-granddaughter, Georgia Whalen.
