TO THE EDITORS:

No one could have predicted two contemporary young West Point Cadets would, 30 years later, confront each other in July 1863 in a terrible battle at Gettysburg. Professors had surely drilled into young George Meade and Robert E. Lee to always strive for the high ground. So naturally Seminary Ridge and Cemetery Hill became their opposing bulwarks. Because each army arrived from a different direction, the supply lines were safe. The moment Lee committed many troops to attack via low ground, this battle was destined to become one of the decisive battles of history.
